What are Bifidobacterium and How do they Keep the Gut Healthy?

In recent decades, the study of microorganisms has become increasingly important due to the large number of functions they have been shown to perform. These include programming the immune system, generating vitamins, or promoting gut health. And this is where Bifidobacterium come into play, a vital sign of a healthy gut.

What are Bifidobacterium?

Bifidobacterium are one of the most important bacterial genera within the intestinal macrobiota. They are anaerobic microorganisms that grow only in the presence of oxygen and are, together with lactobacilli, very useful for our health, especially during childhood.

They are natural inhabitants of the ecosystem of our intestine, performing various functions that have earned them the reputation of being great allies of health. But it can also be found in the mouth, as part of the oral microbiota, and in breast milk. Being in the first three years of life is a privileged opportunity for bacterial colonization of children, helping them to improve their immune system and the maturation of their intestines.

What are the Benefits of Bifidobacterium?

Macrobiota plays an essential role in the homeostasis of our body. In other words, each of the microorganisms that compose it and, in particular, each bacterial strain, has specific properties:

  • They have the ability to modulate the immune system, helping to improve the innate and adaptive response. Thanks to this, they can favor the integrity of the intestinal barrier, preventing the occurrence of hyperpermeability.
  • They protect us from exposure to genetic oxidants, substances harmful to DN. But in addition, they help to eliminate toxins.
  • They help to digest some difficult-to-digest foods, provide essential nutrients and produce useful substances, such as some B vitamins, among which folic acid stands out, which is especially important during pregnancy. All this ensures that our body is in an optimal state of health.
  • They increase motility and help improve intestinal transit.
  • They create short chain fatty acids, which have a very positive effect on the health of the intestines and beyond.

What do if I Lose Bifidobacterium?

Some useful functions performed by Bifidobacterium and microorganisms can be performed only by intestinal microorganisms when their population is in eubiosis, that is, in a balanced way. If the balance is broken, dysbiosis will appear, which has negative effects on our current and future health.

The thing is, a low level of Bifidobacterium can be especially dangerous in babies, leading to problems like necrotizing enterocolitis, infant colic, asthma, or allergies. In the worst cases, it can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders.

But in addition, several studies have shown that in adolescence and adulthood, a reduced presence of Bifidobacterium can lead to diabetes, obesity, and even irritable bowel syndrome. And in old age, the risk of developing tumors increases.

In these cases, it is recommended to use probiotic supplements through products such as Bromatech, which you can buy on, which are very useful in the treatment of intestinal diseases such as dysbacteriosis, abdominal distension and irritable bowel syndrome. Cleaning and removing harmful bacteria and favoring the spread of the most beneficial bacteria.
